Drupal and Wordpress
Some of the two best pieces of software that are easily installed through Fantastico on your site are Drupal and Wordpress. I'll do my best to explain the differences and similarities between the two and give you an example of how you might use them to build your perfect site.
Drupal - Community Plumbing
Drupal is an immensely flexible and powerful content management system. This means that Drupal can serve as the backbone of your entire website and drive all of its features - from bogs, news, discussion forums, user registration, ecommerce, and more. It's almost impossible to list all of the available features, because apart from its base package, Drupal has numerous modules that add functionality and features. You can also find numerous themes that alter the look and feel of your site.
If you want a website that is really geared toward community interaction, take a long hard look at Drupal. You can allow users to register for accounts, post information about themselves in profiles, submit stories and blogs, start threaded discussions, contribute to community books, and more. In return, you can use your site as a way to market and share what is going on with your products, organization, or life. However, to make most effective use of Drupal, you should have a consistent community. With that said though, there is nothing stopping you from leaving out some of the interactive features and just using Drupal to act as a blog or straight forward website.
Use Drupal if... You want flexibility and tons of community features. Drupal does have a little steeper learning curve than a package like Wordpress, but you will also have room to grow and the possibility to add features as your community grows in new directions.
Wordpress
Wordpress is more geared toward blogging. You'll find it is an easy to use but very powerful package for building a website centered on dynamic content. Bogs are great marketing tools for getting the word out about products, game design, and more. Users can sign up and post comments about the things you are writing about. There are tons of themes and plugins that also alter the usefulness and interactivity of your site. However, Wordpress is more focused on being just a blogging system. It is not nearly as powerful and feature rich as Drupal and other content management systems.
Use Wordpress if... You want a rock solid, easy to use website to talk about your products, life, or thoughts with basic interactivity built right in. Wordpress can serve your whole site if you want it too, but if you want to integrate ecommerce packages or full fledged community features, you may find Wordpress lacking down the road.
